Returning to Chrono Trigger

Recently, a friend gifted me the PC version of Chrono Trigger on Steam. It was a very kind thing to do, and I was looking forward to playing it again since I haven’t played it since like, 2004. And let me you, this is a really tight and enjoyable 20-25 hours.

Let’s fire the hot take off right away. Magus sucks as a party member.

Really cool as a villain. Really cool as a sympathetic villain. But he joins too late to really feel like he’s a member of the group. His vibes? Immaculate. His backstory? Tragic.

I just don’t buy him as a party member.

Really cool abilities!

Chrono Trigger is one of the slickest RPG experiences out there. It moves at such a steady pace where you feel like making progress is easy. There’s no overworld encounters, so moving from place to place can be quick. You learn your fastest paths through areas that you repeatedly visit and you also learn the trigger distance so you can avoid fights. The abilities are all fun, and double and triple techs rule.

The story is a fun trip of time hopping with several sidequests actually altering other ages based on what you do in the previous ones. It’s super cool.

THE SOUNDTRACK RULES.

I wish I had more comprehensive or poetic words to say about this game. It’s just a really good game, with a fun cast of characters, an engaging turn based combat system and a beautiful soundtrack. This is a game that’s basically perfect.
